Why the Westcountry?
"When Adam and Eve were dispossess'd
of the Garden hard by Heaven
They planted another one down in the West
'Twas Devon, Glorious Devon"
Sir Edward Gibson, 1905
The Westcountry - the south west corner of England made up of Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset (and some say parts of Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Herefordshire) - one of the most visited parts of the country for the British when they holiday on home ground - the legendary land of King Arthur, dramatic coasts where pirates and smugglers abounded in days gone by, fishing villages, ports and seaside towns, hidden coves and wide sandy beaches, bleak and wild moorland, idyllic villages and ancient churches, steep sided valleys and the wide flat eerie landscape of the Levels, luscious farmland and proper cider country, cities dating back to Roman times, homeland of Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh, departure point for the Mayflower carrying the Pilgrim Fathers, and, in 1944, the jumping off point for a large contingent of the D Day invasion force..
It's a place of beauty, history and legend - a place you really should spend a few days immersing yourselves in away from the well-trodden tourist trail.
